Travel & Housing

Students can expect to do an extensive amount of traveling during their stay in Italy. Therefore, it is important to understand what kinds of things to expect and how to prepare for this kind of extended travel.

A Multi-City Experience

During the program students will be led on a series of excursions to small cities in and around both Rome and Naples. Such cities have included Tivoli, Ravello and Vatican City. This is an exciting way to experience not just the big cities of Italy, but the small ones as well!

Planning Your Travel

Any kind of traveling abroad takes a substantial amount of planning and preparation beforehand. In this case, students should expect to start making travel arrangements as early as 6 months prior to departure. Here are some tips to planning your travel:

  • Make sure your passport hasn't expired

  • Book your flights (arrival and return trip) at least 4 months in advance of departure- this will save you money!

  • Make sure to have Google Maps installed on your phone (or some other GPS app)

  • Get a medical checkup and any other vaccinations updated

  • Pack all valuable items (laptops, cellphones, passport) as carry on items and keep with you at all timesI

  • Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). This is a free program by the US State Department to allow US citizens to notify international embassies of their travel arrangements in case of emergencies that occur while traveling abroad.

In addition to these tips here are some essential items to bring to Italy:

  • Passport

  • Plane tickets

  • Important documents

    • Travel insurance

    • Driver's license or ID card

    • Lodging information

    • Travel itinerary

    • Photocopy of passport

  • Money (cash, credit cards, ATM cards)

    • Convert US dollars to Euros before going abroad

  • Prescription medication

  • Electronic devices

    • Buy a travel converter adapter! Electric outlets are different in Italy than in the US!

  • Towels

  • Laundry bag

  • School supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, folders)

  • Comfortable walking shoes - you will be walking a lot!

Housing

During the program students will be staying in rented apartments in Rome and Naples. The cost of these is already included in the total cost of the program.

It is important to know that the apartments are owned by regular Italians and therefore landlords may not be fully conversant in English. You will have to do your best to communicate with them!

Prior to departure students will sign a housing contract where they agree to follow the rules of living in the apartment. House keys will be provided to students (do not lose them!). Wifi may or may not be provided free of charge- if not students may be required to pay a small fee for it.

Don't forget to bring towels! Towels will not be provided to students so it is imperative to bring your own!

Note: If any problems or concerns arise with a landlord or any other living situation you are encouraged to contact the school in Italy and they will speak to the landlord themselves.
